Best Free Things to Do in Toronto This Weekend

No plans, no budget? Toronto has more free stuff to do than most people realize — parks, markets, free museum nights, and waterfront trails. Here's where to go.

Parks and outdoor spaces

High Park is Toronto's biggest green space, and the High Park Zoo inside it is free — yes, including the llamas and capybaras. It's an easy half-day hangout with friends.

Trinity Bellwoods Park in West Queen West is the classic spot for a picnic, frisbee, or just people-watching on a sunny afternoon.

Along the waterfront, Sugar Beach, Cherry Beach, and Woodbine Beach are all free, and the Martin Goodman Trail runs about 22 km along Lake Ontario if you want to walk, bike, or rollerblade. The Toronto Islands themselves are worth a trip too — just budget a few dollars for the ferry.

Markets and neighborhoods

Kensington Market and the Distillery District cost nothing to wander — vintage shops, street art, and people-watching included. St. Lawrence Market has been around for two centuries and is free to browse (just bring cash if you want to actually eat).

Evergreen Brick Works is a former industrial site turned community hub with trails, wetlands, and a farmers' market — a good change of pace from downtown.

Free museum nights

The ROM is free every third Tuesday evening (4:00–8:30 p.m.), and the AGO is free every first Wednesday evening (6:00–9:00 p.m.) — both require advance tickets. See our full free museum nights schedule for exact dates and how to book.

Annual free events

Doors Open Toronto, usually held in late May, gives free access to buildings across the city that are normally closed to the public. Afrofest takes over Woodbine Park each summer with free African and diaspora music, food, and culture.
