Tight budget, still want to go out? Here are go-to spots near downtown Toronto campuses that won't wreck your week.

Near U of T (St. George campus)

Kensington Market is the obvious pick — a short walk from campus, full of cheap eats (tacos, dumplings, bubble tea), vintage shops, and benches to just sit and hang out. Sneaky Dee's on College St. is a longtime student favorite for cheap nachos and a casual bar atmosphere. For something quieter, Robarts Library's common areas and the green space around Queen's Park are free, central, and easy to meet up at between classes.

Near TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University)

TMU sits right in the middle of downtown, so Yonge-Dundas Square and the surrounding food court options are the default cheap meetup. St. Lawrence Market is a short walk south if you want a more "let's actually walk somewhere" hangout with food stalls to browse. Near York University

York's Keele campus is further from downtown, so on-campus and Vaughan-area spots matter more. Vaughan Mills and nearby plazas have budget food courts, and the campus's own Student Centre common areas are a free fallback between classes.
