Free Museum Nights in Toronto: ROM & AGO Schedule
Two of Toronto's biggest museums open their doors for free every month — you just need to know when and book ahead. Here's the breakdown.
Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)
The ROM offers free general admission on the third Tuesday evening of every month, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Free timed-entry tickets are released in advance on the ROM's website and tend to go fast — book as soon as they're live, especially if you're coming with a group.
Good to know: some special ticketed exhibitions may not be included in the free admission, so check the current exhibit list before you go.
Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)
The AGO offers free admission every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Like the ROM, you'll want to reserve a free ticket online in advance — walk-ins are sometimes turned away once capacity is reached.
Visitors 25 and under also get free general admission at the AGO any time, which makes it one of the easiest "always free" options if you're a student.
Tips for visiting on free nights
- Book tickets online the moment they're released — both museums cap free entry numbers.
- Go early in the free window (right at opening) to avoid the post-work rush.
- Pair it with a nearby free spot — the ROM is a short walk from Yorkville, and the AGO is a few minutes from Kensington Market.
- Free nights are popular for first dates and group hangouts — a good "low commitment, high culture" plan.
Other free or discounted museum options
Beyond the ROM and AGO, look out for the Gardiner Museum's pay-what-you-can evenings and rotating free days at smaller institutions like the Bata Shoe Museum and Museum of Toronto. Doors Open Toronto (late May) also gives free access to dozens of buildings citywide for one weekend a year.
